YGRP early fall update…

Young Guns!

Sorry for the lack of communication via the blog. As I enter my final few weeks before my departure to warmer climes and famous yellow jersey winter training grounds, I want to make sure the Young Guns remains intact through the cyclocross season, as well as ready to tackle the spring road season when I get back.

Dirt Coach Yeo found a cool article using hardtails in Cyclocross racing… check it out here:

Also, PVC is running a cyclocross clinic through the fall:  http://www.facebook.com/notes/portland-velo-club-pvc/cyclocross-training-camp/243765525658560

I would like to do a group road ride next week sometime. I am thinking Thursday afternoon.  I would also like to have an end of the summer pizza get together to go over the summer and talk about the future of young guns. I know that everyone is busy getting back to school, etc. but be thinking of a day that works best and I’ll send out some ideas for time/day.

Young Guns on the top step of the podium!

29 08 2011

Hi All,

In the final race of the Bradbury Junior Series, Young Gun Carter Hall climbed the top step of the podium, besting arguably the toughest field of the summer.  Hall took control midway through the three lap contest on his new Salsa machine, coming into the finish stretch with enough time for fist pumps and a victory salute.  It was a solid day for Young Guns, with Jake pushing through some mechanicals to post a solid finish. Jack flatted early on, but is looking ahead to the fall cyclocross season. With the momentum of C. Hall’s victory, the Young Gun crew is ready to tackle the mud, grit, and grime of New England cyclocross.   Check out Carter on the podium:

Young Guns Ride Schedule

16 08 2011

Hi All,

The weather hasn’t been so conducive to getting out on the bike… unless you really enjoy cleaning your bike. For those of you starting up fall sports, use riding as a recovery activity or supplement to the constant pounding of running.

Here is some riding opportunity for the rest of the week.  I am listing some group rides run by some other clubs in the Portland area. Try them out if you want to get some good group riding practice!

Tuesday, 8/16- Dirt Coach Yeo is heading to the Allspeed MTB ride tonight. He might have room in his car or he might not. Contact him if you are interested.

Wednesday, 8/17- MTB ride at Bradbury, pre-zumvelo kids ride. I plan to get there at 4PM to ride for a good hour prior to the 5:30PM kids ride. Come for both and get in two hours of mellow riding. Let me know if you want to go and need a ride.

Or PVC Wednesday Ride, meets at 5:30PM at So Portland High School parking lot.

Riding Today @ 5PM

15 08 2011

Young Guns!

We will ride today @ 5PM from Yarmouth High School. If it is raining steadily, I will postpone the ride until tomorrow afternoon.

Full week schedule to be posted soon!

Ride tonight (8/8), MTB race Wednesday (8/9)

8 08 2011

Hi All,

We will do a road ride tonight @ 5pm. Meet at Yarmouth High School. We will do a solid hour of riding.

This Wednesday there is a MTB race at Bradbury (part of the junior series). It is SRAM night, so there should be some great prizes available.  Race starts at 6PM, Registration opens at 5PM.  I won’t be there, but please let me know if you plan to race!

Also, this Saturday there is a road race in Lovell, ME. It is 20 miles and would be a great race to try out.  Unfortunately, I will be away this weekend… but again, let me know if  you are interested in racing.

That’s it for now!

Riding and racing…

2 08 2011

Hi All-

Sorry for the lack of communication on weekly rides.

This week we I will lead a mountain bike ride on Thursday (8/4) morning @10AM at Blackstrap Forest off of Hurricane Rd. Please let me know if you are interested, as I might be able to give rides. We will ride for an hour and a half.

Friday, 8/5- There is a group ride that leaves from Portland and rides up to Yarmouth and back. This a great intro to group riding, as the pack is generally reasonable and the pace is moderate. It leaves Portland @ 730AM and returns by 930AM. Meet me in Payson Park if you are interested OR in Yarmouth at the Royal Bean @ 8:15 or so (they have a mid-ride stop).

On Saturday, 8/6, there is Criterium in Concord, NH with a Junior category. I plan to drive down and race in the Cat. 3s, but I will have room if anyone is interested in trying out a fun crit! It is rare that road races offer a junior category these days, so this is a great opportunity.

Below are some pics from the past few MTB Races (they are taken from my phone, so they aren’t very clear).

Carter toward the end of the 12-hour race. It’s almost 10PM at this point!
